Krewella
Krewella is the boundless electronic duo comprised of sisters Jahan and Yasmine Yousaf. Born in Houston to a Pakistani father and German-Lithuanian-American mother, their multicultural background influences their art. Always experimental, they’ve carved out their own niche in EDM. Krewella began as high schoolers in 2007 and broke into the scene in 2012 with their chart-topping self-released debut EP, Play Hard. They kept the momentum going in 2013 with their massive debut album, Get Wet, and the platinum-selling hit single “Alive.” In 2017—a year after making Forbes’ 30 Under 30 list—Krewella chose independence and launched their own Mixed Kids Records label with their bold New World Pt. 1 EP. Their adventurous third album, The Body Never Lies, is out now on Mixed Kids Records. Created from an intimate, internal space over the last year, the LP explores topics of impermanence, the human experience, and their relationship to the world around them as half-Pakistani women in a male governed society.

Thoughts on Women in the music industry: With each year that passes, our understanding of what it is to be a woman grows and moulds into something new and wonderful, but also sometimes terrifying. Having been touring artists for the last 10 years, and now mothers to daughters, we feel the weight of carrying the torch for any other young girl who might choose a life as we have known. Remembering Darwin’s quote – ‘it is not the strongest species that survived, but rather the one most adaptable to change’, it is important to remember that, as women, in a largely male industry, we can thrive, and inspire. ”
